August 16, 2016 Meeting
Meeting of the Fairlee Gardeners
August 16, 2016
Attending:
Miranda Clemson
Barbara Curran
Cathy McGrath
Ginny Reed
Carol Stickney
Enough activity is taking place that we feel some structure for the group would be helpful. Toward that end, we agreed on the following:
- President/coordination/communications: Miranda Clemson
- Legal standing: Cathy McGrath
- Secretary/treasurer: Ginny Reed
- School liaison: Barbara Curran
- Fund-raising/in-kind donations: Cathy McGrath
- Invasive species coordinator: Barbara Duncan (we hope she’ll do it even though she wasn’t at the meeting).
Action items:
- A work day to clean out/divide plants at Chapman’s and plant the space at Cumberland Farms will be held in September (date to be determined). Miranda and Cathy will coordinate the date with Aletta (from Chapman’s), Athena (from Cumby’s), and Frosty.
- Miranda has acquired 77 plants (thus far) for the space. Carol has some bearded iris that can be divided.
- Frost Gardens has donated composted manure for the project.
- Once a date is set, we will issue a press release announcing the project.
- The elementary school has an active garden project. We will consider helping them with weeding, planting, etc. in hopes that the students will reciprocate with some of our town beautification projects. First up – planting daylilies around the phone poles in town in the spring. Each class could be responsible for one telephone pole.
- Cathy will lead efforts to ask for donations of end-of-season plants from local garden stores: Four Corners, Mill Gardens, J&M, Crossroads, Plant Pantry, with a focus on early spring and fall bloomers.
- Cathy will check out the legal standing/structure of the Fairlee Historical Society to see if something similar makes sense for our group.
- Work on curbing invasive species will need to be coordinated with the town, with Friends of Fairlee Forest, the Lake Morey Protective Association, and other interested groups. The goal is to collaborate and maximize the efforts of all.
- Ginny will send a thank-you note to Chris at Frost Gardens. Donors will be noted on the website.
- The group will plan to meet monthly. Setting a regular meeting time may occur at a later date.
